Same as you do with supermarket bread and real bread, The Chorleywood Bread Process that is used for most of that cellophane wrapped bread you buy in supermarkets is also used for making buns. Presuming you have bought good bread from a bakers from time to time you can see the difference a mile off. If you find a good baker making it's own bread he (or she as is the case with my local baker) will presumably make proper hot cross buns too.

In 1490, the Pope made it clear that only in Saxony were people allowed to use butter in baking at this time of year.
That's Saxony, not Anglo-Saxony.
Apparently, that's the origin of Stollen, which was also religious nosh in the beginning

They’ve been ruined by supermarkets selling them all year round. Fake ones at that.
I’ll be eating mine on Good Friday morning after my Lenten fast has finished. As that’s what they are for.
